Cycling is a sport I’m undeniably passionate about. So much so I’ve developed ‘Cycle Performance Chiropractic’ which is a facility specifically structured for cyclists that I hope one day will be able to fund research in to a wide variety of musculoskeletal related performance issues unique to cycling.
I have been fortunate to be the Chiropractor to the French Cycling Team Ag2r LaMondiale during the Tour Down Under almost since its’ inception.
Over the years I’ve also had the honour of working with numerous riders from a myriad of other International and European teams, SaxoBank, Astana, Lampre, Garmin and BMC being just a few. Working with riders I particularly admire like Cadel Evans, Phillipe Gilbert, Maxime Bouet and Simon Gerrans has been nothing less than inspiring to say the least.
A Vertebral Subluxation is an area of altered spinal alignment that disrupts the flow of nerve impulses diminishing the ability of your body to stay healthy.
Instead of just treating your symptoms, your chiropractor is primarily interested in detecting, correcting and preventing Vertebral Subluxations.
A subluxation occurs when a joint loses it normal alignment and ability to move freely throughout its normal range of motion.
When this occurs, it causes nerve interference in the area of the body affected by those nerves, along with changes to the body’s structure. These changes worsen over time if not corrected, a condition known as “subluxation degeneration.”
Spinal adjustments are the essence of Chiropractic care.
An adjustment is the art of delivering a very specific force, in a precise direction to a fixated or “locked up” joint. In turn, this helps to restore movement, resulting in improvement of spinal and nervous system function.
There are many ways to adjust the spine. In our clinic we employ a range of manual and low force techniques that are tailored to the unique needs of each patient.
During pregnancy a woman's body must make many changes to accommodate a new life. Curves in the back and neck change, weight distribution is altered, and hormones encourage widening of the pelvis. This makes pregnant females more prone to back and neck pain, not to mention leg, groin and pelvic pain.
The birthing process, whether natural or C-section, can place much strain on the neck and spine of a young baby. Infants from the time they are born can benefit from a Chiropractic check-up too! It is gentle and safe, so much so that sometimes their sleep can go undisturbed during an adjustment!
Your nervous system derives protection from your skull and spinal column. Daily stresses, such as poor posture, minor accidents and emotional strain can often lead to the development of Vertebral Subluxations. In turn, Vertebral Subluxations cause interference to your nervous system which can be detected by elevated muscular activity.
Good health is dependant on a nervous system that is free from interference.
A Chiropractic health science degree is a minimum of 5 years duration and emphasises the relationship of your spine to your nervous system and health. This means your Chiropractor is ideally suited to examine and monitor spinal function.
The actual profession of chiropractic – as a distinct form of health care — dates back to 1895. However, some of the earliest healers in the history of the world understood the relationship between health and the condition of the spine. Hippocrates advised: “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.”
Herodotus, a contemporary of Hippocrates, gained fame curing diseases by correcting spinal abnormalities through therapeutic exercises. If the patient was too weak to exercise, Herodotus would manipulate the patient’s spine. The philosopher Aristotle was critical of Herodotus’ tonic-free approach because, “he made old men young and thus prolonged their lives too greatly.”
The results of your Chiropractic care can be significantly improved when you incorporate a regular stretching routine. Stretching can help to decrease pain, improve range of motion, prevent muscle deterioration, promote joint health and improve muscle strength.
Your Chiropractor will show you how to do the exercises and supervise you until you are comfortable doing them on you own. Its important to keep up with your exercises as prescribed, but please, only do those exercises that are specifically recommended for YOU and YOUR particular condition.
