Your First Chiropractic Visit
Everything you need to know before your first appointment at Stapleton Chiropractic, from what to wear to what to expect during your initial consultation.
12 questions answeredYour first visit typically takes up to 30 minutes. It begins with a thorough conversation about your symptoms, how they affect your daily life, your medical history, and what you're hoping to achieve from treatment.
Dr Sam Johnson (Chiropractor) will then conduct a physical examination, which may include posture analysis, range of motion testing, muscle strength assessment, neurological tests, and palpation of your spine and surrounding tissues. Based on the findings, you'll receive a clear explanation of what's going on, whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your situation, and a recommended treatment plan. If chiropractic isn't the right fit, we'll let you know and suggest an alternative.
Many patients receive their first adjustment on this visit. The initial consultation fee is $69, and most health funds with extras cover provide a rebate. We accept all major private health funds.
Plan for up to 30 minutes for your initial consultation. This allows time for a detailed conversation about your concerns, a thorough physical examination, and your first treatment if appropriate. We recommend arriving about 10 minutes early to complete intake paperwork.
Standard visits are shorter, typically up to 15 minutes. If your condition requires more time, we offer extended consultations of up to 30 minutes or longer based on clinical need.
No referral is needed. Chiropractors are primary contact healthcare practitioners in Australia, which means you can book directly without seeing your GP first. Over 300,000 Australians visit a chiropractor each week, and the vast majority book directly.
That said, if you've had recent scans, imaging, or reports from other practitioners, it's helpful to bring those along so we have a complete picture.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. Activewear, yoga pants, a t-shirt, or anything you'd wear for a walk are all great options.
Avoid restrictive jeans, tight belts, or stiff fabrics if possible, as they can limit the examination and make the adjustment less comfortable for you.
If you have any recent scans or imaging (X-rays, MRI reports), please bring those along. A list of any medications you currently take is also helpful. If another practitioner has referred you, bring that referral letter too.
It also helps to think about when your symptoms started, what makes them better or worse, and how they're affecting your daily routine. The more detail you can share, the better we can help.
Common reasons people visit us include back pain, neck pain, headaches, stiffness, sciatica, postural concerns, and pain that's affecting work or sleep. If you're unsure whether chiropractic is right for your situation, we're happy to have a quick chat over the phone before you book.
During your first visit, we'll conduct a thorough assessment and let you know honestly whether we can help. If your condition is better suited to another type of care, we'll tell you that and point you in the right direction.
In most cases, yes. After the consultation and examination, if Dr Sam Johnson (Chiropractor) determines that chiropractic care is appropriate and safe, treatment typically begins on the first visit.
In some situations, such as when further imaging is needed or if there are clinical reasons to wait, we may schedule your first adjustment for the second visit. Either way, you'll leave your first appointment with a clear understanding of what's happening and what the next steps are.
Wear comfortable clothing, bring any relevant medical records, and arrive about 10 minutes early to complete the intake paperwork.
Write down any questions you want to ask. There are no silly questions, and we'd rather you leave feeling informed than uncertain about anything.
Not everyone needs X-rays. The decision is based on your specific presentation, medical history, and clinical findings during the examination. If imaging is clinically indicated, we will discuss this with you and explain the reasoning. Where eligibility and clinical criteria are met, X-rays may be bulk billed.
Australian chiropractors complete a minimum five-year accredited university degree, typically a three-year Bachelor's degree followed by a two-year Master's degree. Training covers anatomy, physiology, pathology, biomechanics, clinical diagnostics, radiology, neuroscience, and extensive supervised clinical placement.
All chiropractors must be registered with AHPRA (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), the same regulatory body that registers medical doctors, dentists, physiotherapists, and nurses. Registration requires annual continuing professional development and yearly renewal. Chiropractic is one of only 16 health professions regulated under Australia's National Law.
You can verify any chiropractor's registration on the AHPRA public register at ahpra.gov.au. Simply search by name to confirm their registration status, qualifications, and whether any conditions apply.
Stapleton Chiropractic has been serving the Adelaide community since 1972. Dr Sam Johnson (Chiropractor) is fully registered with AHPRA and is a member of the Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA).
Absolutely. We have a range of techniques available, and your comfort matters. If you'd prefer a gentler, low-force approach without the traditional "cracking" sound, just let us know. Options include instrument-assisted adjustments (such as the Activator method), drop-piece techniques, and gentle mobilisation.
The therapeutic benefit of an adjustment doesn't depend on whether a sound occurs. We'll always work within your comfort level.
